While You’re Down There, Grab A Couple Socks!!

27 08 2008

There are times when words fail. Best as I can, there’s not much I can do to prepare you for this clip. God’s really been transforming my heart towards true worship (ironic considering how long I’ve been playing with different worship teams)…but I can’t help but simultaneously laugh and cringe at stuff like this. Nothing like a Holy Ghost hoe-down, I guess!

and just for comparison…here’s the original music video from Dead or Alive. At least that worship band got the bad haircuts nailed.

Jeremy,
You are right…there are no words! Only a face of bewilderment when watching either video and the question in my head…are people really proud of those?

I have no idea! The main guy seems like he’s pretty into it. Maybe he looks at this as the pinnacle of what he’s achieved musically. !!!

I’m not comfortable with that kind of things. I truly believe there is nothing wrong about Christians having fun -and I can conceive that spinning socks while singing can be fun. But why is it they need a spiritual excuse to have fun? The danger is to diminish the fear of God we should have.

I’m not quite sure Moses spun his socks this way in front of the burning bush…

I will be bringing my socks to church on Sunday, Jeremy – oh wait – you won’t even be there. OK – two weeks and everyone bring their socks. Let’s surprise Jonathan….random acts of sockness.

That was actually painful.

Thus saith the Lord, “Put your hands in the ay-yur. Wave em like you just don’t cay-ur”…

errr… I think not.

The guy really IS into it. If he’d done it in an ironic way, it would almost be forgiveable, but even his hair was being serious. Jeremy, dude, how do you FIND this stuff??

By the way, go look at the girl in the green at about 3:40. She has some sort of epiphany and looks around herself, (still spinning the sock!) with a look of growing befuddlement on her face! Classic!

Iain, I have no idea where I find these things. They just fall into my lap, as if from on high. Actually, I do know where I found this one: the Relevant message boards. That’s where I found April too, ironically enough. Obviously, they’re still good for something!

And you’re right about that girl! She’s like…uh, am I really here? Is this really happening? On the other end of the spectrum is the dude with the white bandana at 2:05. He’s just a little too into it.

Finally, I can’t believe the dancers on stage. If that was me, I’d punch myself in the face. And then ask each of them to punch me in the face.

Oh and Pam? You bring socks to church and I’ll chuck whatever instrument I’m playing into the congregation as a protest. hahaha…

Ahh….I will use my socks then as a shield to deploy you weaponry….and it will be on!!

it was “your” when I sent in the comment above – I guess the “r” got lost in the cyber dryer – sometimes like SOCKS do.

i couldn’t even watch the whole thing b/c it’s so wrong. but the only thing that i thought was “man, the air in that room probably really stunk with all those socks being twirled around!”

I can’t believe that even before he tells them what’s going on they’re all more than willing to just take their shoes off and grab their socks. At that point I would have kept my feet in my shoes and pointed them towards the door. Freaky.

I wonder what would have happened if he’d asked them to ‘drink the kool-aid’?

I believe there is absolutely nothing wrong with praising God anyway you seem fit (within the confines of scripture). Remember, Jesus hated the legalism of the Pharisees. I don’t believe there is anything in scripture (and please let me know if I’m wrong) that would condemn group worship like this. Someone above said, “I truly believe there is nothing wrong about Christians having fun … But why is it they need a spiritual excuse to have fun?”. Why not? Why can’t we have fun in non-spiritual settings AND have fun in spiritual settings. Is there something in scripture that commands us to not have fun while worshiping?

Paul talks about the church gatherings having order and I don’t think this varies from this. It appears that the worship leader planned for this part in the service, everyone was participating as planned. There was no disorder, imho. Now… if this type of behavior was not a part of this congregations culture and he pulled this out of his hat, that would have fallen under disorder and would have been wrong. Or if a group of teens jumped up and started spinning their socks in a service that didn’t call for it… that would be disorder. But, I don’t see anything disorderly about this.

I would not encourage anyone to try this in a church that didn’t support this type of culture. Actually… I would encourage this just due the awful smell that must have been in that room!!!! I’d suggest handing out clean golf towels or something at the door ;-)

That’s my $.02.

First….greetings brethren and sistren :-)

In response to the video, and also to Thomas…there’s absolutely nothing wrong with believers getting together and having fun (as long as it isn’t ungodly)…doing so builds us as a body…it’s a “part” of fellowship…however when believers are having “fun” but calling it worship, it’s not okay. The purpose of worship is to honor and praise God…we should enjoy doing it…but “our” fun and enjoyment should come not from the type of music, the swinging of socks, the excitement in the atmosphere, etc…etc… but that we serve, love and are saved by a holy, gracious, and loving God. I don’t get that from “You spin me right round, Jesus, like a record”. I don’t know that that is an offering that is a sweet smelling aroma to the Lord…I have nothing against different genres of worship music…I enjoy some of the holy hip hop….but whether it be CCM, Christian rock, christian rap, gospel….if the words are empty…it’s meaningless….and scripture tells us we’re going to give an account for our idle words. There may have been a few folks in there that may have been swinging their socks in a posture of worship to the Lord…those who weren’t, I pray that the Lord will show them the heart of worship that He desires for them to have towards Him.

Malaka

FUN! Why are we trying to make church FUN! God is our source of life, not fun!

The words of his worship were empty and the song was merely for dancing, it wasn’t till the end he said “give him glory.”

Christianity is fun because were free, worship is everyday, every hour not only in sock swinging worship service.

Ramp youth group always has some wierd outrageous stuff that make me cringe! The majority of lost teens are not ready to see and indentify with that spiritual maturity. I’m glad that is their youth group and not their outreach!

God is love, not hype!

Wow – how contrasting the videos certainly are!! Maturity does lack in our youth because of the lack of true discipling, fun is ok, it’s good, but i would have to choose my own lyrics and tune for the sake of context at the least.
Maybe the music without words if they wanted a “work out”.
Now the others from ‘the way international’ i actually smiled.
Thanks for the eye-opener, and challenge to my own heart and conscience.

The Man who is leading this song is Rick Pino. He happens to be a personal friend of mine. The video in question was filmed at the Children’s Ramp services down in Alabama. So the way most of you are judging it (from an adult standpoint) just wont fit. If you youtube some of Ricks other videos you will see songs like “Your Love is Like” or “We Prepare the Way” or “Holy is our King” When he is leading in a more adult worshipful setting his music is different.

Rick is a graduate of the Christ for the Nations School of Worship and Technical Arts, which has produced some of Today’s foremost worship teams and leaders i.e. Kari Jobe and Gateway Worship, Klaus Kuehn, Elizabeth Clark. and Notable songs like “Revelation Song” among others.

This video may seem slightly amusing, but at the same time if you look at it in context you might think differently.

i had no idea what song this was from the bass line. so ashamed of myself. but come on, you spin me right round jesus. and this song isn’t even that musically complicated. i’m just so full of a billion thoughts to why this is weird and funny and just confusing.

You gotta believe that God is laughing at us sometimes – This was hilarous to me. Why – God – Why? If I was not a believer this stuff certianly wouldn’t help. It is a good thing that Jesus reaches for us, this kind of stuff makes me laugh and cry all at the same time. Was this guy at Lakeland?

Grace and peace to you Matityahu…

I’m in agreement with the poster, “Robin”, who hits the nail on the head in saying that events like this refelect a lack of discipling in our youth groups. I appreciate the credentials of your friend, Mr. Pino. However, I am opposed to seeker-friendly approaches to developing a relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Whatever you “get” them with, is what you’ll have to use to keep them…and as Pastor Ryan stated God is love, not hype.

When we seek to entertain as opposed to teach, we belittle the potential in our youth to grasp hold of the Gospel…and more importantly the amazing power of the Holy Spirit to come alongside of our children and lead them to God’s throne of grace available to them through Christ Jesus. I firmly believe that when we appeal to their flesh, then they never learn to worship in spirit and truth…which is what we are called to and made for.

In Christ,
Malaka

Ummmm…. how is spinning socks “appealing to their flesh” or “entertaining”? If either of those two are true of any readers of this blog, seek help immediately. Seriously.
